We Texas's top experts in rodent control. We are not a typical Houston rat removal or pest control company. We don't treat rats or mice like insects, because they are not - they are mammals! You can't just use poison to get rid of them, like you can with insects. Unlike most Houston pest control, we focus on complete and permanent solutions. We don't just use poison every month. We solve your rodent problem forever, by following these steps:
- Inspect the entire house, ground to roof, and the attic
- Seal shut all entry areas, no matter how small, with steel
- Set a dozen or more rat or mouse traps in the house and attic
- Remove all rodents as they are caught and monitor for activity
- Once there is no more activity and no more caught, we're done
- When necessary, we clean rodent droppings, replace insulation, and repair chewed electric wires
Houston Rodent Removal Tip:
Symptoms of a Sick Rat
If you have a pet rat, you always want to be able to tell if your rat may be sick. When your pet rat begins acting differently or has a different appearance about it, you may be concerned about its health. Looking for symptoms of a sick rat can be challenging, but not impossible. Continue reading to find out more about various symptoms a sick rat may show.
Sick Rat Behavior
One of the most important things to keep in mind about your pet rat is that if it ever does not feel well, it will more than likely go hide. Like many small creatures, rats like to be alone when they do not feel well, so it may be hard to locate your pet if it is not feeling the best. In addition to their propensity to hide when not feeling well, rats also try to conceal any sickness they may be having by trying to act normal. Even if they do not feel well, they may appear to be just as healthy as ever. That is why it is important to be aware of the following symptoms you may be able to notice. Also, be sure to note any normal behavior that your rat has always exhibited since you have owned it, as oftentimes that may be the way they are and they may not be sick.
Porphyrin
One of the most notable symptoms of sickness in a rat is increased levels of porphyrin. This is simply a buildup of red staining around the eyes of your rat. When the rat is feeling healthy, there will generally be very little porphyrin, as it grooms regularly. When the rat is not feeling well, it may lack the energy to remove the porphyrin.
Congestion/Allergy
For lack of better description, think about a human who is having seasonal allergies. They sneeze a lot and have a runny nose and lots of mucus in their nose. Rats behave much the same way with certain illnesses, oftentimes sneezing, having large amounts of mucous, and making sniffling noises.
Breathing
Rats can experience a variety of different breathing issues when they are not feeling well. One of the most common is faster and heavier breathing. Another symptom can be a noise from their respiratory tract when they breathe. Both of these signify some kind of disease that is making their lungs not work as well.
Body Irregularities
One concerning symptom to be aware of with your pet rat is any new bump or lump that may appear on your rat. Oftentimes this is just a benign tumor or some kind of harmless cyst. However, sometimes it can signify a more serious illness, so it is important to get any irregularities of their body checked out.
Hair Problems
Surprisingly enough, the hair of a rat can be one of the best indicators of your rat's overall health. One of the more common symptoms of a sick rat that is easily identifiable is any significant hair loss that is occurring. In addition, an ungroomed coat can definitely signal that something may not be right with your rat, as they are fastidious groomers of their fur.
Activity Level/Eating
If your rat, like most, was very energetic and always moving at one point, but now is not moving as much, there might be cause for concern. Any sign of lethargic behavior for a rat is pretty unusual unless your rat has always been fairly lazy. In addition to a reduced activity level, a lack of eating may also be a warning sign that your rat may be sick.
